Feature Gateway Markers

Initiated through the BIA’s 2019 Streetscape Master Plan, the Gateway Markers establish clear neighbourhood entry points using sculptural steel signage with seasonal light projections. Each solar-powered installation features colour-coded bands, perforated street names, and subtle sidewalk lighting designed to enhance pedestrian experience while minimizing light spill. Artist-designed projections evolve throughout the year, supporting creative programming and district identity.

Project Goals

The Gateway Markers were developed to create recognizable entry points into Yonge + St. Clair and strengthen the neighbourhood’s sense of place. The project aims to improve wayfinding, establish a clear district identity, and create memorable arrival experiences for pedestrians entering the BIA from different directions.

Community Impact

By making neighbourhood entrances more visible and distinctive, the markers help pedestrians recognize when they have arrived at Yonge + St. Clair. Their combination of lighting, colour, signage, and public art adds visual interest to the streetscape while reinforcing a shared identity across the district.

Looking Ahead

The projection system provides opportunities for the Gateway Markers to evolve without replacing the permanent structures. Seasonal artwork and creative programming can continually refresh their appearance, allowing the installations to respond to events, celebrations, and neighbourhood initiatives.
