Created by artist Soon Cho, this portable mural features 4' x 4' aluminum panels illustrating everyday icons, from coffee cups and streetcars to music and local foods, that reflect the neighbourhood’s vibrant rhythm. Mounted with removable fasteners, the modular design allows the artwork to relocate as buildings change, making it uniquely suited to a rapidly densifying district while celebrating Yonge + St. Clair’s culture, diversity, and creative energy.
The Portable Mural was created to celebrate Yonge + St. Clair’s everyday culture while responding to a neighbourhood experiencing significant redevelopment. Its modular format allows public art to remain part of the streetscape even as sites change, combining neighbourhood storytelling with flexibility.
The mural turns familiar objects and experiences into a visual celebration of neighbourhood life, giving residents, workers, and visitors imagery they can recognize and connect with. Its colourful presence adds character to the pedestrian environment while ensuring redevelopment does not eliminate accessible, street-level cultural expression.
As buildings and development sites change, the mural can be relocated. This adaptable model offers a way for the BIA to preserve public art through periods of construction and redevelopment while potentially introducing the installation to new audiences and different parts of the neighbourhood.
